You don’t have to live in Las Vegas to scratch your head and ask yourself “why are there no professional sports teams in Vegas?”
Excellent question. In fact, it’s one of the most deeply philosophical, thought provoking questions in the history of man.
I admit that I’m nervous, even a bit scared to tackle such a quandary. Yet I will attempt to answer this most powerful question with no regard to my own well being. “Why?!” you ask yourself again. Well because that’s how much I care about you, each and every one of you. It could also be that I live in Las Vegas, love sports emphatically, and really, REALLY want professional sport’s teams here. However, those are minor motivating forces and are not statistically significant.
Before I get into the heart of the argument in favor of professional sports in Las Vegas I want to provide you with the landscape of existing sports teams. Here is a list of the current semi-professional sports teams that are located here in Las Vegas.
- Las Vegas Knights – Indoor soccer team established in 2006 under the Premier Arena Soccer League.
- Las Vegas Sin – Indoor football team established in 2011 under the Legends Football League.
- Las Vegas Legends – Indoor soccer team established in 2012 under the Professional Arena Soccer League.
- Las Vegas 51’s – AAA baseball team established in 1983 under the Pacific Coast League.

It is also important to note that college basketball has a strong following in Las Vegas. The University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) has an excellent basketball program and Las Vegas hosts several college basketball tournaments each year including the Mountain West Conference Tournament, West Coast Conference Tournament and the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. Las Vegas also sponsors a nationally televised college football bowl game every year called The Las Vegas Bowl.
